CES 2018 Wrap Up

CES Day One Coverage

It wouldn’t be CES if we didn’t talk about TVs, right? CES 2018 has come to a close, but we made sure to check out some of the most interesting TVs and monitors while we were at the show.

Here’s a look at some of the hottest tech we saw in the last few days.

Screens, Screens and More Screens

The term “CES” makes people think of giant TVs. At CES 2018, we saw huge TVs, but we also saw large monitors from non-TV makers. NVIDIA, a company best known for its graphics cards, has created a BFGD, which stands for Big Format Gaming Display (not big f*#king gaming display). The 65-inch monitor features 4K and HDR capabilities, a 120hz refresh rate and G-Sync technology.

NVIDIA’s BFGD also has Shield, which is similar to its Android-powered box devices. This means the monitor can access streaming services such as Netflix so it can act like a TV, and can run many other apps. Partners including Acer, Asus and HP are expected to begin selling BFGD models this summer.

On the more affordable end of screens is TCL, a company that has brought feature-rich TVs like the P607 to the market at reasonable prices. For 2018, TCL has upped the amount of LED zones on its displays and further improved picture quality on its 6 series. If the company can continue to offer solid pricing, its TVs will be the best deals of 2018.

A New Reality

There seemed to be a massive push for virtual reality at CES 2018, and seemingly every company had some type of VR headset to show off. Perhaps the big players of VR were aware that they would have more competition because they made a statement at the show. Most noteworthy is HTC’s updated Vive Pro headset.

HTC increased the pixel count and updated the design for the pro model as well as added a solid sounding headset in the package. But the best thing HTC is coming out with is a wireless adapter that allows users to untether themselves from the PC. It’s a bit cumbersome, but it gives owners the opportunity to truly walk around in a game without running the risk of tripping over a wire. The wireless adapter will work with the new Vive Pro and the original Vive.

PC Cases are Art

At the IN-Win booth, we were able to check out what the maker of the most beautiful PC cases had to offer. They did not disappoint.

IN-Win 915

The IN-Win 915 has beauty on the inside.

The new 915 series PC case is a curvy black box of pure power and color. It has a rounded front, which means there’s no space for disc drives (for those of you who still use them), but the inside offers plenty of space for multiple full-sized graphics cards and nine total fans. The top grill can raise to provide better airflow and Mars fans can be pointed in any direction to nullify hotspots. It is clear that IN-Win is making cases that are suitable for prolonged gaming sessions.
